Specialty Orthopedic Group is seeking a skilled and compassionate Pre/Post-Op RN to join our Surgery Center team. This position will be full-time, Monday-Thursday.

JOB SUMMARY

The Pre/Post-Op RN position provides comprehensive nursing care to patients in both the preoperative and postoperative phases of care, ensuring safe, efficient, and compassionate patient experiences throughout the surgical process. The Pre/Post-Op RN Float plays a vital role in preparing patients for surgery, monitoring recovery, and supporting optimal patient outcomes while collaborating closely with physicians, anesthesia providers, and the surgical team.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Communicate preoperative and postoperative processes, treatments, and recovery expectations with patients and their significant others, fostering cooperation, understanding, and trust while addressing concerns.
  • Provide patient education tailored to individual needs, in accordance with physician instructions and facility policies, to ensure optimal preparation for surgery and successful recovery after discharge.
  • Deliver direct patient care in accordance with physician orders, including performing comprehensive assessments of patient responses to treatments, medications, pain management interventions, and adverse reactions.
  • Monitor vital signs and other critical indicators during both pre-op and post-op phases, intervening appropriately when deviations from expected values are detected.
  • Conduct comprehensive health history interviews, order diagnostic tests as directed by anesthesia, interpret results, and coordinate consultations with anesthesia providers or specialists when necessary.
  • Assess and monitor postoperative patients for pain control, airway management, hemodynamic stability, surgical site complications, nausea/vomiting, and readiness for discharge.
  • Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately while documenting patient care in accordance with facility policies and regulatory standards.
  • Verify patient identification, ensure understanding of the procedure by cross-referencing signed consent forms, confirm the correct procedure site and side, and check for allergies or special needs prior to the procedure.
  • Prepare patients for surgery based on physician preferences and anticipated patient needs, ensuring efficiency in workflow and time management.
  • Provide discharge instructions and education to patients and caregivers regarding medications, activity restrictions, wound care, follow-up appointments, and signs/symptoms requiring medical attention.
  • Float between pre-op and post-op/PACU areas as needed to support patient flow, staffing needs, and continuity of care.
  • Maintain patient privacy during all interactions, adhering to HIPAA standards to protect the privacy and security of PHI and ePHI.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from an accredited School of Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current RN license from the State Board of Nursing.
  • BLS required; ACLS/PALS preferred and required within 60 days of hire.
  • Previous experience in pre-op, PACU, ambulatory surgery, critical care, or perioperative nursing preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge in critical thinking and applied nursing practice.
  • Strong assessment, communication, organizational, and multitasking skills.
  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques, surgical instrumentation, specialty surgical equipment, and postoperative recovery standards.
